Short Ribs Braised in a Crockpot
This is the crockpot recipe for braised short ribs if you want tender meat! You may sear the meat by braising the short ribs. The meat is then simmered in a liquid to produce a tasty, soft cut that melts in your mouth. It’s relatively easy and makes even the most brutal cuts of meat, like short ribs, slide off the bone.
Ingredients for Crockpot Braised Short Ribs
Beef: Typically, braised short ribs are used. As mentioned, because short ribs are a more challenging cut of beef, braising them softens the meat. If you cannot obtain short ribs, you can use beef chuck for the short ribs in this recipe.

Vegetables: For taste, I added tomato paste, onions, mushrooms, and garlic. Other vegetables like turnips, sweet potatoes, radishes, beets, or carrots could also be added.
Beef Broth: I only ever used beef broth. But if you’d rather, use half dry red wine and half beef broth.
Ways to Purchase Short Ribs
The first step is selecting the short ribs for the dish. When purchasing short ribs, also known as arm short ribs or beef chuck short ribs, look for well-marbled pieces of beef—select cuts of bone-in meat with ample fat. The thickest fat on the surface must be cut off before cooking.
For the most excellent braising results, go for short ribs sliced in English. This is the point at which the meat separates from the bone. However, this recipe would also work with short ribs prepared the flanken way, which are thinly chopped across the bones.
Getting Short Ribs Ready
Once you’ve chosen your meat cuts and brought them home, it’s time to prepare them for cooking. First, trim the thickest fat from the meat’s surface using a sharp knife. The membrane and silverskin (a coating of silvery sheen) keep the meat attached to the bone while cooking; therefore, do not remove them.

Once the short ribs have been trimmed, sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides of the beef. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When the oil is heated, sear the meat,, bone side up,, for one to two minutes. The meat will continue to cook in the crockpot without being entirely done. The seared beef should be moved to a large crockpot.
How to Prepare Short Ribs in a Crockpot for Braising
Cook the vegetables after the short ribs have been seared in a slow cooker or crockpot. Add the tomato paste, onions, and mushrooms to the skillet you used to sear the steak. Stir them together to ensure the tomato paste coats them. Cook for three to five minutes over medium heat.
After adding the garlic, sauté for approximately one minute. Add the beef broth and turn the heat up to high. After bringing the mixture to a boil, lower the heat and let it simmer for around five minutes. Occasionally stir, scraping down the skillet’s sides as necessary.
Cover the ribs in the crockpot with the mixture. Cook for 7 to 8 hours on low heat or three to five hours on high. The braised short ribs are done when the meat readily separates from the bone. Serve over homemade mashed potatoes. Additionally, braised short ribs go well with roasted asparagus or roasted zucchini pears on the side.
