Easy French Onion Soup

Easy French Onion Soup
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp Olive oil
- 2 Tbsp Unsalted butter
- 4 Large yellow onions, thinly sliced (approximately 4 cups)
- ½ Tsp Kosher salt
- ½ Tsp Black pepper
- ½ Tsp Garlic powder
- 32 Ounce (960g) beef broth
- 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 30-35 Homemade croutons, or store-bought, divided
- ¼ Cup (25g) Parmesan cheese, grated, divided
- 6 Slices provolone cheese, divided
- Parsley, for garnish
Instructions
- Put the butter and oil in a medium pot over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the onions and cook, stirring periodically, for 25 to 30 minutes, until the onions are extremely soft and have a brown caramel color.
- Add the garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix to blend.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce and beef broth. Bring to a simmer. For ten minutes, cover and lower the heat to low.
- Place the oven rack in the middle position at the top. Set a baking pan with six broiler-safe bowls and preheat the broiler.
- Fill each of the six dishes with the soup. Place 6-7 handmade croutons, a slice of provolone cheese, and a generous teaspoon of parmesan on top of each bowl.
- The soup bowls should be placed to the broiler for two to three minutes, or until the cheese has browned and bubbled.
- Before serving, let it cool a little. Garnish with parsley on top.
French Onion Soup Made Easy
There are a few variations on the origin of French onion soup. King Louis XV is credited with one of the most well-known. After a day of hunting, he and his crew were famished and had to make do with the champagne, butter, and onions they had on hand. We were fortunate that the soup turned out to be excellent! Nowadays, croutons and cheese are frequently put on top, regardless of the recipe.

Ingredients for Soup
Onions: I used yellow onions for this dish, but you could definitely use red, white, or both.
Broth: French onion soup is generally made with beef broth, which is what I used. However, other recipes use beef stock or chicken broth.
Croutons: My homemade croutons will genuinely make this soup stand out from the rest. I don’t mean to brag, but maybe a little. Believe me, we even tried a couple of different methods to ensure that the croutons were flawless.
They are so delicious on their own that you might need to conceal them before adding them to the soup! Another option is to top each soup cup with a toasted baguette.
Cheese: This soup frequently calls for Gruyere cheese. But I decided to top it with a slice of provolone cheese and some parmesan cheese. You could also use Monterey Jack, Gouda, Fontina, Jarlsberg, and mozzarella.
Caramelizing Onions
A French Onion Soup dish is obviously all about caramelized onions. To prepare the onions, heat the oil and butter in a medium pot with a lid over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, turning periodically, until they are soft and have a caramel brown hue, 25 to 30 minutes.
After that, add the garlic powder, salt, and pepper. The Worcestershire sauce and broth should then be added. Cover the saucepan, lower the heat, and simmer the mixture for ten minutes.

Easy French Onion Soup Recipe
Now that the onions have caramelized and are boiling in the broth, it’s time to prepare the remaining ingredients. First, place a rack in the middle of the top of the oven. Place six broiler-safe bowls on a baking tray and preheat the broiler.
Evenly distribute the soup among the six bowls. Top each bowl with 6-7 croutons, a piece of provolone cheese, and a generous teaspoon of parmesan cheese.
The soup bowls should be placed under the broiler for two to three minutes or until the cheese has browned and bubbled. Before serving, remove the soups from the oven and allow them to cool somewhat. If using, sprinkle a small amount of parsley on top.
Tips for Selecting the Best Onions
French Onion Soup can be made with yellow, red, or white onions. However, how can you be sure that you are choosing the best onions at the store? The best onions at the store will be firm, seem crackly on the outside, and smell mild. If the smell becomes overpowering, the onion may be beginning to deteriorate.
Additionally, discard any onions that have mushy, brown patches or sprouts coming from them.
